Are you Preparing for Your Next Meeting? Here are 10 Tips to Consider

Meetings are rarely free of conflict. Whether it’s a brainstorming session or completing a major project, tempers can run high when groups are under stress. If you have your goals set towards business success and advancement, it is important to know that meetings are a prime opportunity for making a positive impression, networking and nailing the contract. 

When you are invited to or organizing your next meeting, here are tips to get you prepared:

  1. When going for a meeting, it is best to know the names of the people you will be meeting. Also, find out what their job entails and anticipate likely questions they may ask. Try to find out who will be responsible for making the final decision.
  2. Be careful about personal remarks.
  3. Don’t create mental barriers to communication. Mind your body language. Be mindful if you are in the habit of folding your arms across your chest. Sit up, Look alert and maintain eye contact.
  4. Discuss but don’t bring up disputes.
  5. If you are already seated, and an important person enters the room, stand up to shake hands. A woman should rise to her feet as readily as a man.
  6. If you are holding the meeting, your choice of location should be appropriate and impressive. Choosing an appropraite meeting room will add class and value to the meeting.
  7. If you are the one that called the meeting be sure to take the lead. Create an agenda and let people know ahead of the purpose of the meeting. Set your ground rules at the start of the meeting
  8. Time management is key. Start early and finish at the appointed time. See if you can chat up each person in the room before time is up. 
  9. If the meeting was called by another party, be responsible enough to participate by listening and asking relevant questions.
  10. Maintain a high-interest level. When people notice your energy, they will also catch the vibe and be willing to participate.


To make a meeting successful doesn't require you to change your entire character. Rather make yourself a critical piece in the meeting. Applying the tips listed above will make your meeting more productive and meaningful.
